Fluvanna County gave Wilson Memorial just about everything the Hornets could handle Friday night, but behind five rushing touchdowns from Keyvon Jones Wilson Memorial prevailed 41-29, ending Fluvanna’s six-game win streak and the Flucos’ season at 7-4.

It was as perfect a start to the Region 3C quarterfinals as Fluvanna could’ve hoped for – Garrett Jordan spinning off a would-be tackler and exploding down the visiting sideline before weaving back to the middle of the field for a touchdown.

Then, after Wilson Memorial evened the score, it happened again. The Hornets kicked to Jordan again and he broke away again down the sideline, a second-straight kick return for a touchdown on what would become a four-touchdown night for the junior speedster, and a 14-7 lead midway through the first quarter before the Flucos’ offense had even touched the ball.

But Wilson stuck with their gameplan and bounced back, reeling off 28 unanswered points to take a 35-14 lead with Jones scoring relentlessly while rushing for more than 300 yards.

The Flucos refused to go quietly though, with Jordan taking his special teams show to offense. After fumbling a pitch to the left, Jordan scooped up the ball and reversed field, taking off for a 62-yard touchdown. After a two-point conversion, Fluvanna trailed by just 13 at 35-22.

After the Flucos barely missed a well-placed onsides kick, Fluvanna’s defense stood strong with Chris Johnson and Johnny Thompson stuffing a screen. The Flucos’ offense picked up a couple of first downs, then Jordan picked his way through the defense on a sweep to the right where he again reversed field and scored to make it 35-29 Flucos.

Fluvanna kicked deep to the Hornets and Wilson got the drive rolling, with Jones capping it with his fifth and final touchdown and a 41-29 lead. After forcing a turnover on downs, Memorial kneeled it out and advanced to the Region 3C semifinals where they’ll face a Liberty Christian Academy squad that beat Broadway Friday night.

The loss wraps up the career of a solid senior class led by 2024 Class 3 defensive player of the year Johnson and quarterback Will Lambert, running back Matt Rea and wideout/defensive back Sam Loving that helped third-year coach Mitchell Pace get off to a strong start with two playoff appearances in his first three seasons.
